The Film Industry Will Grow If We Support It.” – Filmmaker Larry “KLM” Boafo, Breaks Down Collective Action And Crowdfunding Vision For Ghanaian Cinema.

We have all heard the complaints. Walk into any discussion about the Ghanaian movie industry, scroll through social media on a Friday night, or listen to conversations at film screenings, and you will hear the exact same refrain:
“Why are we always seeing the same old faces on our screens?”
“Why aren’t we telling fresh, daring stories?”
“When will Ghanaian cinema compete on the global stage again?”

As a filmmaker, story originator, and the CEO and Founder of LOOMFLIX, I hear these questions constantly. And as someone deeply embedded in the trenches of indie filmmaking, I dare say that we cannot expect a cinematic revolution if we aren’t willing to fund it.
In the film industry, casting an unknown actor or greenlighting an unconventional script is a massive financial risk. Without a financial safety net, producers default to what they know sells – the same established names and the same predictable formulas.
If we want to break this cycle and see emerging talent fill our screens, we need a cultural shift. We need to embrace crowdfunding.

Expanding the Definition of “Funding

When people hear the word crowdfunding, they immediately think of money. But as a rising filmmaker, I have learned that support comes in many shapes and sizes. Funding shouldn’t be limited to cash.
If you want to see our film industry grow, you can support a filmmaker by looking at what resources you already have. For example:

  • The Food: You could volunteer to feed a cast and crew for a weekend.
  • The Space: You could lend your house, office, or property as a filming location or premiere venue (usually after filming)
  • The Gear: You could lend a piece of equipment, a vehicle, or a prop.
  • The Time: You could volunteer your skills on set.
In the indie film world, value is value. Sponsoring lunch for a crew or saving a filmmaker from paying a hefty location fee is just as impactful as writing a check.
But when those physical resources aren’t available, yes, it comes back to the power of collective small contributions. A benevolent donation of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1,000 Ghana Cedis from a few hundred passionate movie lovers or even family can change the entire trajectory of a young director’s career.
Transparency is the Bridge to Trust
I know what many of you are thinking: “How do I know my money isn’t being used for something else?” or “How do I know this isn’t a scam?”
The trust gap is real, and it is the biggest hurdle we face. To bridge this gap, filmmakers must treat the public like professional investors. You don’t need to show a receipt for every single roll of gaffer tape, but you must show a macro-level plan.
At LOOMFLIX, we advise filmmakers to make their synopsis available, then break their budgets down into the five standard industry phases so donors know exactly where their money is going:
  1. Development: The blueprint—scriptwriting, concept art, and planning.
  2. Pre-Production: The prep work—auditioning those new faces, scouting locations, and rehearsals.
  3. Production: The shoot—paying the crew, renting gear, logistics, and keeping everyone fed.
  4. Post-Production: The polish—editing, color grading, sound design, and music.
  5. Marketing and Distribution: The launch—trailers, posters, festival submissions, and premiere screenings.
When a filmmaker can look the audience in the eye and say, “40% of what we raise goes to Production to feed the crew and rent the camera, and 20% goes to Post-Production to make it look world-class,” it builds an unbreakable bond of trust.

Take Advantage of LOOMFLIX

LOOMFLIX is built to be more than just a media platform. It is an engine for growth. That is why LOOMFLIX offers dedicated donation and crowdfunding services. Take a look at this example: https://events.loomflix.com/events/fundraising-for-tsi-veve-film-production

If you are a rising filmmaker with a solid proof of concept, a strong track record, or a brilliant script, take advantage of the LOOMFLIX platform. it provides the infrastructure to create secure crowdfunding and donation links for your next project. If you can prove to the public that your vision is real and your process is transparent, LOOMFLIX has the tools to help you get funded.

To my fellow Ghanaians, I leave you with this challenge: let’s stop being passive consumers who complain about the state of our cinema, and let’s become active stakeholders who build it. The next time a young filmmaker asks for your support – whether it’s a 50 GHS donation or permission to shoot a scene in your compound – back them up.

Let’s support crowdfunding. Let’s champion our own. It’s time to Be Seen.
