According to the Guinness World Records website, director Ryan Coogler’s 2025 vampire thriller Sinners has officially made Academy Awards history after earning 16 Oscar nominations, the highest number ever received by a single film.
The record-breaking achievement places Sinners at the center of this year’s awards conversation, marking a significant milestone not only for Coogler but for original storytelling in Hollywood. The film, written and directed by Coogler, who is known for Black Panther (2018) and Creed (2015), also reportedly became the highest-grossing original movie of the past 15 years, further cementing its cultural and commercial impact.
Set in Jim Crow-era Mississippi, Sinners follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack as they return home to establish a juke joint for their community. What begins as a celebration of music and Black culture soon descends into terror when a supernatural force threatens their sanctuary, forcing the group to confront evil using unity, heritage, and resilience.
The film stars Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, and Miles Canton, with Jordan, Mosaku, and Lindo all earning acting nominations. Sinners also secured nods in major categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and the newly introduced Best Casting category.
Reacting to the historic nominations, Michael B. Jordan told The Hollywood Reporter that the recognition was overwhelming.
“For all of these pieces to be singled out and acknowledged and honoured with the nomination, it’s something that’s really hard to put into words right now,” he said.
Jordan added that the film’s success reflects what is possible when artists are given adequate support.
“These numbers and the turnout for these movies show that when artists are given the opportunity, space, and support, they can deliver cinematic experiences that bring audiences back to the cinema.”
As anticipation builds toward Oscar night, Sinners continues to stand as a landmark achievement; one that blends genre filmmaking, cultural storytelling, and industry-shifting recognition.
